Prospering on Mainstreet

We live and work in the historic downtown section of Milford, Delaware. And for the past fifteen years we have been active in the non-profit redevelopment group Downtown Milford, Inc. (Check out the group's website at http://www.downtownmilford.com/.) Recently the group became a certified member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's MainStreet Program. (To learn more about the Main Street program visit the website http://www.mainstreet.org/.) Milford is one of eight cities in Delaware having such a Main Street programs. One of the advantages of participating in the MainStreet Program is that members receive a lot of good technical assistance. Recently the National Trust Main Street Center launched a monthly "webinar" series by means of which they are providing Main Street expertise right to your personal computer. The first webinar was on May 21 and focused on "Financing Business Expansion and Development". (Sorry, but access to these webinars are restricted to Main Street Network Members only.) One of the key points made in this presentation was the importance for businesses located in downtowns to continually work to develop additional new sources of revenue—for example by adding new product lines, marketing to other businesses, expanding into new locations, finding new ways to reach customers, etc. For me what was particularly interesting was the discussion on how the Internet can help a business expand. As readers of my previous blogs know, the LadyBug Shop was founded on the premise that the way to prosper in a small downtown without a lot of foot traffic was to sell both in the store and via the Internet. It seems so obvious! Yet in this webinar it was stated that only about a quarter of downtown businesses have any presence on the Internet. They listed a number of reasons why businesses have been slow in using the Internet and provided some suggestions on how to overcome these obstacles. One specific hurdle for many business owners was the challenge of building and operating a website. The webinar suggested that a good way to test the waters was to first try sales through eBay.com, Amazon.com, Alibris.com and other online storefronts. Another approach is offered by a new company, Shopify.com, which provides a quick and easy way for businesses to get a basic online storefront up and operating at low cost. For the last three years our in-shop sales have grown at an average of 29% per year. But our Internet sales have grown at an average rate of 85% per year—and now represent 70% of our sales. While the bulk of our revenue now comes from Internet sales, we highly value being part of a downtown business community. This is how we got involved in Milford's annual Bug & Bud Festival--and why Rhonda and I have lead the opening parade each year. This April we were joined by our granddaughters Madison (her third parade) and Jordan (her first). You can't be in parade on the Internet!

Largest Ladybug Collection

What better way to decorate your home but by filling it with ladybugs! A woman in Lakewood Illinois has done just so, and has broken the Guinness World Record for the LARGEST Ladybug Collection! Sheri Gartner has collected 2,050 Ladybug items. The ladybugs were tallied after spending hours with volunteers counting the ladybugs to raise money for a near by shelter, Turning Point. Thanks to Sheri and her volunteers they raised $2,000 for Turning Point.
Click here to read the full story in the Chicago Tribune!
After finding this article I was amazed that Sheri Gartner had collected so many ladybugs. LadyBug Shop currently carries a little over 500 ladybug gifts, so to think about 2,050 ladybugs has inspired me to find even more new ladybug gifts!
How many ladybugs do you have?

Ladies In Red

The 5th Annual Bug & Bud Festival was held in Milford, Delaware on Saturday, April 26 and it was a huge success. The Festival has grown over the years and gotten great press both locally and nationally. It is a Spring family festival celebrating the anniversary of the ladybug becoming Delaware’s official state bug (Read the Full Story) and Arbor Month.

Rhonda and I led the opening costume parade, as we have done every year. In keeping with tradition, we are accompanied by two of our granddaughters—Madison (three years old) and Jordan (five months old), each dressed as little ladybugs. We even have a marching band, “The Bug Strutters”, which performs as the parade winds into the downtown center.
The weather was perfect--sunny and warm--and thousands of people enjoyed outside activities, shopped from craft vendors, feasted on a variety of foods (especially grilled chicken prepared by our local Parks & Recreation Department staff), listened to music and generally had a great time.

We want to acknowledge a special treat that each year is provided during the Festival. The LadyBug Shop distributes packages of live ladybugs! These have been provided to us each year by a great company in Redmond, Oregon—Ladies in Red. When we first contacted them about the Festival five years ago they were enthusiastic about the event and told us they would ship us a fresh batch of ladybugs just before the Festival. They were good to their word and just a few days before the Festival in 2004 several boxes of hibernating ladybugs arrived—and they have done the same every year since. We take the ladies out of refrigeration the evening before the event and by the next morning they are moving around and ready to be released into gardens all around town. If you need some ladybugs (or other garden friendly insects such as nematodes or praying mantises) we urge you to visit Ladies in Red on their website http://www.ladiesinred.com/ or give them a call at 541-504-019. They ship worldwide and customize quantity and packaging to meet their customer’s needs. And, they have a really cute and informative website. (If you don’t know how many ladybugs can fit in a cup, you can find out here!)

How the Bug & Bud Festival Began

I have told the story before on this blog that our vision to have a store that focused on the ladybug was inspired by the fact that the ladybug became Delaware’s official state bug thirty-five years ago after an elementary school class in Milford lobbied the State Legislature for this. So it was natural that when we had the grand opening of the LadyBug Shop in fall of 2003 we invited the class’s teacher, Mollie Brown Rust, and all the students (now grown up, many with children of their own) to attend the opening. Mollie Brown did come, as well as a number of her students.

During the grand opening event I talked with Mollie about how the City of Milford had celebrated both the 10th and 20th anniversary of the State Legislature’s decision, but that I had not heard anything about a celebration of the 30th anniversary, which would be the following April. She said that she did not think that anything was being planned—so then and there I promised her that I would try to organize a celebration.

The next week I talked with Don Abrutyn, who headed Milford’s downtown revitalization organization (http://www.downtownmilford.org/) and Gary Emory, the head of Milford’s Parks and Recreation Department. Both men were enthusiastic about the idea of an event to celebrate the anniversary. And Gary immediately suggested that we should combine it with recognition of Arbor Month, since Milford had just joined the national Tree City program and was committed to some form of public recognition of that event. A few days later it was also Gary who came up with the idea that the festival be called the “Bug & Bud” festival.

As they say, the rest is history! Within weeks a committee was formed, planning meetings were underway and within a short time the event was announced with fanfare. A family-oriented spring festival was seen by all as a nice addition to the City’s calendar, as a popular festival was already held each fall in downtown Milford.

The first event was so popular that it seemed that without any discussion it was decided that this would be an annual event, and so it has become. This year we will have our 5th Bug & Bud Festival on Saturday April 26. And we are looking forward to many more in future years.

Earth Day is a wonderful reminder to us all about how important it is to take care of Mother Earth. Here at LadyBug Shop we recycle all unused cardboard boxes, water bottles, unused paper and more. And to reuse we use cardboard boxes to mail our ladybug filled packages! We also use energy efficient light bulbs, a great way to save energy and money.

In case you didn't know ladybugs are a wonderful way to promote organic farming. Ladybugs are used in place of harmful pesticides. Some of the places I have found that use ladybugs for organic farming include the Mariquita Farm, Black River Organic Farm, Ladybug Organic Coffee Company and more! To find farmers near you that offer organic farming check out PioneerOrganics.com. Check out this wonderful article about a group of students in Oregon that are planning to release 250,000 ladybugs in honor of Earth Day! Don't forget to contribute something this Earth Day.

Why "Click & Mortar"?

As I have discussed in an earlier entry, the LadyBug Shop is what is called a “click & mortar” business. This means that we sell both via the Internet (the “click” part) and we have a store that sells to customers who shop in our physical store in downtown Milford, Delaware. I expect that if we hired an outside consultant to study our business and tell us what we should do to increase our profits, he would say “Get rid of the store and focus on the Internet sales”.

It is true that the bulk of our sales are made over the Internet and shipped to customers we will probably never see. And on a cost per dollar of sales basis, we get a higher return from our Internet sales than from our store sales. The cost of our website and AdWords advertising is less that the cost of having a show room, print advertising and the time it takes to wait on customers.

Why then don’t we not get rid of our show room, rent out cheaper quarters outside the downtown business area and focus our energies on the Internet business?

There are many reasons. It is nice meeting customers and interacting with them. We like being members of a downtown business community and interacting with other merchants. It is more interesting to work in a small, historic downtown business district that in a warehouse in some industrial park.

But the primary reason we are a “click and mortar” business today is that we started the business in large part to demonstrate what we believed could be a way for small businesses to get started and survive in a downtown that was trying to revitalize itself. We had been active for several years in Downtown Milford, Inc.—a typical small town commercial business district revitalization effort. (Visit www.downtownmilford.org for more information about this great group.) And we had watched for several years as numerous small retail businesses tried and failed to get established in our downtown. It was a chicken and egg situation—there were too few interesting shops in our historic downtown to attract many shoppers, yet without the shoppers we could not attract and sustain new start-up businesses.

We felt the solution was to build a business that could tap the rapidly growing and global body of shoppers who search for special products on the Internet, while at the same time attract shoppers to our shop by our unique, but locally connected products. And by attracting shoppers to out store, we would also be helping to increase the volume of shoppers in our downtown who could patronize other shops that located there. In other words, we see the “click & mortar” business as an important tool for "mainstreet " revitalization. And that is the primary reason we remain committed to the “click & mortar” model.

For more information on “mainstreet” revitalization efforts across the United States visit www.mainstreet.org. And if you are interested in shopping at other "click & mortar" businesses that are contributing to the revitalization of their downtowns visit www.shopmainstreet.org.

New York International Gift Fair

For the past week I have been attending the New York International Gift Fair looking for new products for the LadyBug Shop. This Fair is the premier gift and decorative accessories market in the United States. This semi-annual event fills 638,000 net square feet, including the entire Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan and several additional exhibition halls. The 45,000 national and international attendees are drawn from major retail outlets, specialty retailers, distributors, catalog companies and others. There are more than 2,800 firms exhibiting in eleven major merchandise sections of the Fair, including international sponsored groups representing Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Guatemala, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Canadian Province of Quebec, South Africa, Thailand and United Kingdom. I had a great time--and now have sore feet. I walked for miles and met with most of our current wholesale suppliers and met many new ones. Dan, who works in New York, was able to lend a hand for part of the show. He served as my scout, searching for new products as he walked up and down aisles quickly. I followed, placing orders. Thanks to a lot of great work that Zoe helped me with prior to the show, I was able to restock much of our inventory that was greatly depleted over the past holiday season. During this show we were particularly interested in expanding our line of turtle products, and were delighted to find many excellent new turtle items. We were especially pleased when we found suppliers who produced nice items in both ladybug and turtle variations. Obviously we are not the only ones who see the harmony of the two as a pair! Over the next weeks we will be presenting some of the new and exciting items we purchased at the Fair as shipments arrive and we put them up on our website. So watch this space!

Pay Per Click Advertising

By the time our website was up and running in July 2004, pay-per-click advertising was becoming popular and we immediately starting using this form of advertising to attract shoppers to our new website. Pay-per-click (PPC) is an advertising model used on search engines where advertisers only pay when a user actually clicks on an ad to visit the advertiser's website. Advertisers bid on keywords they think their target market will use as search terms when they are looking for a product or service. When a user types a keyword query matching the advertiser's keyword list, a small ad by the advertiser is shown. These ads are called a "sponsored ads" and appear along with the “organic results” on search engine results pages. The search engines clearly differentiate between the two types of results so that users are aware which results are paid advertisements and which are not.

While it would be great to rely only on search engines leading customers to our website via organic search results--since these are free--a new website normally does not appear near the top of the organic search results. It normally takes time for a website to be recognized by search engines and assigned a high position. And initially few people even knew our website existed, so it would be rare that they would type in our URL and come directly to our website. So the best way to get quick recognition and begin selling our products via the Internet was by using pay-per-click services.

The price advertisers pays per click depends on the number of bidders on each word or phrase. We were fortunate that our products are highly specialized and there are not that many web businesses that compete for the words that we have chosen. Thus the cost per click has been relatively low, averaging thirteen cents per click over the last several years. The cost per click has also been rising gradually over time, with the average last month being up to eighteen cents per click. However, the effectiveness of our campaigns has increased even more rapidly, so that the cost of the ads relative to our Internet sales has declined quite dramatically over the past three and a half years. Clearly Internet sales at the LadyBug Shop would be a fraction of what they are today if it were not for pay-per-click advertising.
